It was sports<\/a> day at school, and Ecmiss was buzzing. He kept bouncing on his toes and couldn\u2019t stop grinning. His shoes were double-knotted, his shirt was tucked in (well, sort of), and everyone\u2014mommy, daddy, even Rosie\u2014was sitting on the grass with snacks, cheering already, and nothing had even started yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll right kids, the race is about to start! Everyone line up!\u201d came the teacher\u2019s voice through that scratchy megaphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn your marks\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ecmiss held the spoon tight. The egg sat there like it was daring him to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGet set\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He took a deep breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGO!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He shot forward like a rocket. Legs pumping, tongue peeking out the side of his mouth, egg wobbling but staying on like a champ\u2014until, yeah\u2026 plop<\/em>. It fell. Rolled right off and cracked into mush on the grass. His face dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then someone in the crowd\u2014his dad?\u2014shouted, \u201cKeep going! You\u2019ve got this!\u201d Another voice: \u201cSlow and steady, Ecmiss!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stood there for half a second, thinking maybe he should just\u2026 stop. But something inside him didn\u2019t want to. Not today. Not with Rosie watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He crouched, grabbed another egg, set it in place, held the spoon like it was treasure, and walked. One careful step at a time. People were clapping. He wasn\u2019t first. Didn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then, somehow\u2014he crossed the finish line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His friends picked him up like he\u2019d won gold. He laughed. Big, proud, can\u2019t-believe-I-did-it laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI did it!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou did amazing, Ecmiss,\u201d said Clem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot as good as you,\u201d Ecmiss said, \u201cyou were like… zoom!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clem grinned. \u201cYeah, but you didn\u2019t quit. That\u2019s even cooler.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThanks,\u201d Ecmiss said. His cheeks hurt from smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMommy! Daddy! Look what I got!\u201d he yelled, holding up his ribbon like a trophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVery good, Ecmiss,\u201d said mommy, clapping. \u201cWe knew you could do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rosie clapped too, even though she didn\u2019t know why. She just knew her big brother was awesome.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afer a while<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Later that day, the family went to the petting zoo. Ecmiss held Rosie\u2019s hand as they walked past a couple of sheep that looked like walking pillows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay, Rosie,\u201d he said bravely. \u201cThey\u2019re just sheep. They don\u2019t even have teeth\u2026 I think.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of them sneezed. Right in Ecmiss\u2019s face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYuck! Goat kisses!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone laughed\u2014until Ecmiss yelped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d asked daddy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy ice cream!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay, buddy, we\u2019ll get another.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo\u2014it\u2019s not that! My nose! A greedy bee stung me!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOhhh,\u201d said mommy, pulling a wipe from her bag like a magician. \u201cPoor Ecmiss.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy\u2019d it sting me? I didn\u2019t do anything\u2026 well, I might<\/em> have swatted at it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBees don\u2019t like being swatted,\u201d mommy said gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut it was trying to eat my ice cream!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd you were trying to stop it. Bees don\u2019t know the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They followed the little bee as it buzzed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIs that its house?\u201d Ecmiss asked, pointing at the hive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYep. That\u2019s called a hive. And guess what? There\u2019s not just one bee in there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s not?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNope. Thousands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ecmiss stared, wide-eyed. \u201cIt sounds like a plane in there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey\u2019re making honey,\u201d said mommy. \u201cThey use nectar from flowers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo they do<\/em> like sweet stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExactly. Just like ice cream.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ecmiss crossed his arms. \u201cStill rude. Should\u2019ve asked first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To make him feel better, they went for a donkey ride. Rosie climbed on first, then Ecmiss behind her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhoa. This is high.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou okay?\u201d daddy asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah. He must be super strong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDonkeys are small but mighty,\u201d mommy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLike me!\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The next day, they were off to the botanical garden. So many colors it made Ecmiss\u2019s eyes hurt\u2014but in a good way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCome on, Rosie! Let\u2019s find flower treasure!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat one\u2019s yellow like the sun,\u201d said mommy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSunflower,\u201d Ecmiss guessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCorrect!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd that white one?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMoonflower,\u201d she answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ecmiss whispered like it was a spell. \u201cSunflower yellow. Moonflower white.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he sneezed. Twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s that stuff?\u201d he asked, pointing at the yellow dust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPollen,\u201d mommy said. \u201cMakes your nose tickle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rosie pointed to a red one. \u201cRose!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRoses are red, violets are blue\u2026\u201d Ecmiss started to sing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSunflowers are yellow and buttercups too!\u201d Rosie joined in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came the maze. It was huge. Ecmiss darted ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ll find the fountain!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five minutes later: \u201cUh-oh\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No Rosie. No mommy. Just leafy walls and silence. He stood still. Listened hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trickle trickle…<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There! Water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He followed the sound, turned left, right, left again, and\u2014boom<\/em>. Fountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMommy! Daddy! I found it!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou got here all on your own?\u201d daddy asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYup. I listened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell done,\u201d mommy smiled. \u201cSee? Sometimes being lost just means you\u2019re on an adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came the water park.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOkay, Rosie,\u201d Ecmiss said, already in teacher mode. \u201cKick your legs like this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She splashed. Giggles everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re a good teacher,\u201d mommy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly\u2014pirate ship!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey need help!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCaptain Ecmiss to the rescue!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSunscreen first!\u201d mommy shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut the pirates!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven pirates need protection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stood still. Got slimed with sunscreen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMommy\u2026 I look like a snowman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow you look like a protected<\/em> snowman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armed and ready, they stormed the pirate ship. Water sprayed everywhere. Rosie screamed with laughter. Ecmiss fell overboard, got up, laughed harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVictory!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow let\u2019s relax,\u201d daddy said. \u201cLazy river time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ecmiss floated. \u201cThis is nice. But slow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRace to that palm tree?\u201d Rosie challenged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re on!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She won. Again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then they lined up for the biggest slide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy is this line forever?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBig slide, big wait,\u201d said daddy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan\u2019t we do the second biggest?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTwo slides next to each other. We\u2019ll go together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the top, Ecmiss looked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMommy\u2026 hold my hand?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThree\u2026 two\u2026 one\u2026 AHHHH!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Splash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat wasn\u2019t so bad,\u201d he said, spitting out water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou were very brave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
